One in four people in the UK are obese, which means they are 64 per cent more likely to have a stroke.
The ways in which being overweight can affect your health are endless:
- 90% of adults with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese
- Obesity reduces life expectancy by an average of 3 to 10 years
- Being overweight or obese contributes to at least 1 in every 13 deaths in Europe
- 90% of obese individuals are at risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
- The list goes on…
We all have the power to make changes that can reduce these threats to our health, which is why we’re supporting National Obesity Action Month – the UK’s first month dedicated to fighting obesity.
Obesity is often about much more than “just eat less”, otherwise millions of people would have just taken that advice. NHS guidelines say obese patients should have access to dedicated centres, staffed by experts in weight loss, exercise, and talking therapies, to help them reverse their weight gain prior to bariatric surgery.
Recent research has revealed that these services are still few and far between, which is why we have signed this petition and would like you to sign it too.
Obese people deserve to have specialist help available to them in their locality, with your support this can soon be a reality!
